Unit Conversion Basics

Converting between units is like translating between different measurement languages. We use conversion factors to change from one unit to another.

Length Conversions

We use these relationships:

Centimeters (cm) Meters (m) Kilometers (km)
100 cm 1 m 0.001 km
100,000 cm 1,000 m 1 km

Example: Convert 250 cm to meters

Since 100 cm = 1 m, we divide by 100: 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5 m

Weight Conversions

We use these relationships:

Grams (g) Kilograms (kg)
1,000 g 1 kg
500 g 0.5 kg

Example: Convert 3,200 g to kilograms

Since 1,000 g = 1 kg, we divide by 1,000: 3,200 ÷ 1,000 = 3.2 kg

Liquid Volume Conversions

We use these relationships:

Milliliters (mL) Liters (L)
1,000 mL 1 L
500 mL 0.5 L
250 mL 0.25 L

Example: Convert 750 mL to liters

Since 1,000 mL = 1 L, we divide by 1,000: 750 ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 L

Comparing Measurements

Comparing measurements helps us understand which object is longer, shorter, heavier, or lighter.

Comparing Lengths

When comparing lengths, we need to:

  1. Make sure both measurements are in the same units
  2. Align the starting points of both objects
  3. Look at where each object ends

Example: A pencil is 15 cm long and a pen is 180 mm long. Which is longer?

First, convert to same units: 180 mm = 18 cm

15 cm vs 18 cm → The pen is longer by 3 cm

Comparing Weights

When comparing weights, we need to:

  1. Make sure both measurements are in the same units
  2. Imagine a balance scale
  3. The heavier object will tilt the scale downward

Example: A book weighs 0.8 kg and a laptop weighs 1,200 g. Which is heavier?

Convert to same units: 0.8 kg = 800 g

800 g vs 1,200 g → The laptop is heavier by 400 g

Reading Temperatures

Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. We measure it using a thermometer in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).

Understanding Thermometers

Key things to know:

  • The liquid inside rises when it's warm and falls when it's cold
  • Water freezes at 0°C (32°F)
  • Water boils at 100°C (212°F)
What temperature is shown on the thermometer?

Balance the scale by adding weights to the right side. Click on weights to add them, and click on added weights to remove them.
